Empowering Social Justice Leaders to
Rest, Reflect, and transition successfully
Social justice leaders across Africa face heavy demands, from political resistance and resource constraints to public expectations and personal risk. These pressures often lead to burnout, premature leadership exits, and limited space for reflection. To better understand how leaders are supported, Busara Africa conducted a scoping study for the Ford Foundation in South Africa. The study explored programmes that promote rest, leadership transitions, and reflective writing for leaders driving gender, racial, and environmental justice.
Key findings indicate that embedding rest into organisational culture, supporting leadership transitions at both individual and organisational levels, and using writing as a tool for reflection and legacy-building.
Recommendations include institutionalising rest and wellbeing practices, strengthening transition support, and providing flexible funding for leadership development. By highlighting these needs, the study underscores the importance of intentional spaces for renewal, reflection, and succession planning to sustain effective and resilient leadership across Africa.
