Decolonising Development:
More Than Just a Conversation

Decolonisation in development is not just a trending topic—it is a fundamental shift in how we approach our work, relationships, and impact. At Busara Africa, we are passionate about helping organisations navigate these necessary yet complex conversations, moving beyond dialogue to actionable change.

We had the privilege of facilitating a thought-provoking session with the Global Programme Team of American Leprosy Missions (ALM) on decolonisation in development work on the 21st January 2025. Through deep discussions, active reflection, and practical exercises, the team explored what decolonisation means within their context and how they can integrate these principles into their daily work.

One of the most important takeaways? Decolonisation is not just about policies and structures—it starts with us. Unlearning colonial frameworks, questioning long-held assumptions, and reimagining power dynamics are all essential steps toward fostering genuine equity and collaboration.

We are grateful to the ALM team for their openness and commitment to this journey. These conversations are never easy, but they are essential. At Busara Africa, we believe that real change happens when organisations are willing to engage, reflect, and take action.

If your team is looking to navigate similar discussions, we would love to support you. Let’s work together to build a more just and equitable development sector.
