Insights from the Energy Sector Women's Leadership Initiative Workshop

The USAID West Africa Energy Program (WAEP) enlisted the services of Busara Africa Limited to facilitate the Energy Sector Women’s Leadership Initiative (ESWLI) programme.

Busara supported WAEP in facilitating the Energy Sector Women’s Leadership Initiative programme in August 2023, specifically targeting Ghanaian women in the energy sector. The overarching goal of the Leadership programme was to develop the capacity of women in the energy sector to bridge the gender gap in leadership and advance the sector. The leadership workshop took place at the SU Tower in Accra from the 22nd to the 23rd of August 2023. A total of thirty-four (34) women actively participated in the workshop. Among the thirty-four nominees, representation came from organisations such as the Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCO), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Daystar Power Group Limited, Bui Power Authority, Regional Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, and the Council on Women in Energy and Environmental Leadership (CWEEL Ghana).

About The USAID West Africa Energy Program (WAEP)

WAEP is a 4-year programme with a primary aim to advance the objectives of the Power Africa initiative. It launched the Energy Sector Women’s Leadership Initiative (ESWLI) to support efforts to increase access to affordable and reliable grid-connected electricity services in West Africa. Its interventions are to achieve the following:

  1. Increase the supply of power in West Africa.
  2. Enable expanded end-user connection to the grid.
  3. Improve the technical and institutional capacity and performance of select national utilities and other relevant national power sector entities.
  4. Accelerate the establishment of a high-functioning regional power market.
